The De La Rue Safeguard® Onoto Pen
A Masterpiece of British Heritage and Sovereign History.
Onoto is proud to unveil a landmark collaboration with De La Rue, the world’s premier designer of banknotes and security documents. This writing instrument brings together two centuries of British excellence, merging the art of fine pen-making with the literal fabric of global commerce.
The hallmark of this edition is its transparent vault: a high-clarity resin barrel containing genuine shredded banknotes provided by De La Rue. These fragments of security print and guilloché patterns are suspended in a permanent mosaic, ensuring that no two pens are identical.
The collaboration sees a fusion of Onoto’s artisanal craftsmanship (est. 1905) and De La Rue’s global legacy in currency (est. 1813), celebrating their shared history from 1905 to 1958.
To celebrate the Arab League Summit 2024, hosted by The Kingdom of Bahrain, Onoto was commissioned to create a bespoke pen to be presented as national gifts to the attending dignitaries.

A pair of pens are designed for the well-known gun maker Holland & Holland. The exquisitely engraved sterling silver cap design features the brand’s signature gun pattern “Royal Scroll”. The pen barrel is engraved with the chequering pattern to mimic the design on the wooden grip.
A “Founder’s Pen” is designed exclusively for The Fitzwilliam Museum, the art and antiquities museum of the University of Cambridge.
The Founder’s Pen is exquisitely engraved, inspired by the well-known entrance to the famous Museum, and hand-gilded with expert craftsmanship. The pen is complemented with gold-plated sterling silver fittings, including a delicately engraved cap button representing the stunning dome at the museum.
